SUMMARY

  • X-Culture Research Conference (a.k.a Paper Development Xackathon)
    • Organized as a conference, you will be presenting your work, and you can apply for funding from your university as for any other conference
    • X-Culture provides support for developing a publishable paper. This can include secondary data, data collection, and/or developmental feedback
    • Researchers intensively work on developing research papers onsite in Chicago
    • Researchers go home with a paper idea, co-author(s), and a clear timeline for a publishable paper
  • This year, we will be organizing this differently. In the past, we have grouped the accommodations in with the cost of the Xackathon, This year, we will separate that out.
  • Registration cost: $500. This includes:
    • Administration
    • Facilities
    • Wifi access
    • 1 welcome reception
    • Social event
    • Lunches and dinners during the event
    • A Polo shirt
  • Accommodations: $160 per person per night
    • The accommodations will be in two-bedroom apartments for $320 per night. We will do our best to accommodate your needs, but we will need to make sure that both rooms are filled with the same check-in / check-out dates.
    • NOTE: AOM conference hotels cost around $300 per night. Thus, if you plan to attend AOM, staying in these accommodations through AOM will be the most cost-effective option.

BACKGROUND

X-Culture collects huge amounts of data. We are tracking over 3,000 variables: longitudinal, multi-level, multi-source, and multi-method.

Just about anything related to international teams and virtual collaboration – we measure it.

We have dozens of papers in development based on the data, but many more good publications are still to be uncovered in our database.

Traditionally, the researchers have been working alone or in small co-author teams. They would collect (or buy) their own data, analyze them, and write papers. Unfortunately, this model is very limited. A person can have only so many ideas and has only so many hours a day to write papers based on the collected data. As a result, most data sets are never fully utilized. Many great discoveries remain undiscovered.

X-Culture does things differently. Not only do we eagerly share our data with researchers aiming to craft and publish top-tier research papers, but we also extend our support to those passionate about gathering their own data through X-culture collaborations. In support of these initiatives, we host our annual X-Culture Research Conference—a distinctive blend of a writing retreat and research hackathon, affectionately termed the “Xackathon.” This event underscores our commitment to fostering a vibrant community of researchers, whether they seek to utilize existing data or embark on new data collection projects.

LODGING

Accommodations will be at a local university. This year, we will have 2 bedroom apartments instead of dorm rooms. Each bedroom (approximately $160 per night) has secured access and a private bath. The picture below gives you a general idea about what the bedrooms with private baths will look like. The apartments will have a shared living room and fully equipped kitchen. The facilities also have a fitness center which guests can access. The accommodations are near the metro but are also within walking distance of the convention center.

FUNDING

The event qualifies as a conference for university funding applications, requiring a research idea submission. The accept/reject decisions will be made based on the peer reviews of your submission. Accepted ideas will be presented at the conference and included in the proceedings, published on our web page.
